Putting drills to work on at home

Anyone who has ever played the game of golf knows that putting can be one of the most frustrating parts of the game. From the outside looking in, putting seems like it would be the easiest aspect of the game. You are right there close to the hole. You can see exactly where you need to hit the ball. However, when you are standing over your ball on the green, it can be very difficult to stroke it with exactly the right pace and break every time.

Putts per round

Most amateur golfers average anywhere from 32 to 35 putts per round of golf. Tour pros average around 29. This may not seem like a huge number, but 3-6 strokes per round of golf can easily be the difference between winning and losing a tournament or match.

Putting practice accessories

Fortunately, putting is by far the easiest and most inexpensive golf shot to practice. You do not need to haul your golf clubs to the driving range. You do not need to spend money for buckets of balls every time you want to practice your putting. Also, you do not need a lot of fancy golf equipment. By simply spending a few euros on a practice putting mat and a practice cup or hole, you can practice your putting almost anywhere. It is also a lot more time effective to practice your putting than any other aspect of your game. If you have 15 spare minutes in your office, you can set up your mat and practice dozens of putts without even breaking a sweat.

Muscle memory

Becoming a successful putter is as much about training your brain as it is about training your body. When you practice a repetitive motion over and over again, eventually you get to the point where you don't even think about that motion and your body is just doing it. This is referred to as muscle memory. If you spend some time hitting nothing but 3-foot, 6-foot, and 12-foot putts over and over again, eventually hitting those putts will become like breathing for you, and you will not even have think about the stroke.

Once you have the feel of these putts down so well that you could make them nearly blindfolded, all you have to do is adjust for the course you are playing. For example, you may hit so many practice 6-foot putts that you could practically make them in your sleep. Now, when you are faced with a 6-foot putt on the course, and you know that the greens are a little wet and playing a little slow, you simply adjust your normal 6-foot stroke to accommodate the speed of the course you are playing.

Choosing a putter

Everyone has heard the phrase "You get what you pay for." And most of the time that phrase is true. When buying most golf equipment, the more you can spend, the higher quality golf clubs you will get and the better your results will be. However, this is not always the case when it comes to putters.

Putters, more than any other club, are about feel. You may find that a €30 putter feels better in your hands and fits your body better than a €300 putter. If you find yourself in this situation, go with the putter that feels best to you. You will find that a putter that feels comfortable will almost always yield the best results.

Putting can be one of the most frustrating, but also the most easily polished parts of your game. You do not need any high priced golf equipment to practice putting. Simply get yourself a few inexpensive golf accessories, take your golf clubs with you to the office, the garage or the basement a few times a week, and soon you will see putting strokes drop off of your scorecard.
