Player Profile - Adam Scott

Adam Scott took on superstar status in the golf world after his dramatic performance at the 2013 Masters Tournament. Scott was born in Adelaide, Australia on July 16th, 1980. He spent his high school years on Australia’s Gold Coast.

While in high school, Scott was a member of the Golf Australia National Squad. While a member, Scott won the Australian Boys Amateur in 1997 and 1998. Scott attended college in the United States at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Early Professional Career

Adam Scott turned professional in the middle of the 2000 golf season, after having early season success on the European Tour. Less than a year later, in 2001, Scott won his first tournament as a professional on the European Tour when he claimed victory at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Dramatic Major Victory

While Scott only holds one Major Tournament victory, it was an extremely memorable win. In the final round of the 2013 Masters Tournament, Scott separated himself from the pack and found himself tied for the lead heading into the final hole. He proceeded to hole an extremely difficult 20 foot birdie putt for what seemed like a sure victory. In fact, Scott allowed himself a bit of celebration, feeling he had secured the title.

However, Angel Cabrera was not quite ready to concede the green jacket to Scott. Cabrera also birdied the 18th to force a playoff. Getting his emotions in check, Scott parred the first playoff hole (18), as did Cabrera. On the second playoff hole, Cabrera had a good look at a birdie putt which he was not able to make.

Scott, however had a 12 foot birdie attempt, which he drained for the victory. The win propelled Scott to number three in the PGA world rankings, tying his highest ranking to that point in his career.

Tournament Record

Overall, Scott has won 22 professional tournaments. Ten of those wins have come on the PGA tour, with seven more coming on the European Tour. In August of 2013, Scott climbed to 2nd in the PGA World Rankings and has remained their since. Scott also has won on the Asian Tour as well as the PGA Tour of Australasia.

Away From Tour

While in Australia, Scott still resides on the Gold Coast. He is the touring golf professional at The Palms Golf Course Sanctuary Cove. He is also an avid and accomplished surfer. Not only is Scott one of the most talented young golfers on the Tour today, he is also one of the most popular and well liked young men on the tour today.

This is evidenced by a rather famous photograph taken of Scott just after he holed what he thought was the winning putt on the final hole in regulation at the Masters. While the photographer’s intention was to capture the joy on Scott’s face, he captured something else as well. Standing just behind Scott is his playing partner for the day, Marc Leishman.

As the putt hit the bottom of the cup, the photo captures Leishman giving a fist pump in celebration of Scott. It should be noted that Leishman was very much in contention for the win that day as well. In fact, the two men were tied for the majority of the day.

So, to see Leishman celebrate what he thought was a victory for Adam Scott in that moment speaks volumes of the character of both men. Even Cabrera seemed as happy for Scott as anyone at the conclusion of that tournament. Not only is Scott a tremendous talent, he appears to be a tremendous gentleman as well.
